Southerness in relation to other famous golf courses of Scotland.

Southerness is widely accepted as the best course in the South of Scotland. It is less renowned however than many of the great Scottish courses such as St Andrews and Dornoch, as a result of its youth, ( it was only completed in 1947) and its relative lack of accessiblity. Today these are less of a factor as the course matures and as the roads are upgraded. It is now attracting more and more people to come and play, and gaining more and more fans in the process.

In terms of the other courses in Scotland, Southerness is really not all that out of the way. The great west coast courses of Troon and Turnberry are only a couple of hours away, and at 40 minutes from the border, Southerness is ideally placed for anyone travelling from Scotland to England or vica versa.

On a tour of courses in Scotland, this is one place you should really try to visit. It is highly recommended, coming in the top hundred courses in Britain poll in both Golf World and Golf Monthly since the early 90's, and is also still relatively cheap to play compared to other more famous destinations.

Its lack of fame has not detracted it any in the eyes of those who know about golf. There have been several major Scottish championships held here, as well as the British Youths, in which local boy and now Ryder Cup star, Andrew Coltart came runner up.

It is good enough to test the best players in the Scotland, and is as good as you are likely to play anywhere. You may not have heard of it before, but you will be telling people about it afterwards if you do pay it a visit.
